The Beacon of Ties, Tides + Thyme

A wish hanging on The Beacon of Ties, Tides + Thyme.

Jo teamed up with designer and community artist Miriam Nabarro to create a collaborative sculpture in the Southbank Centre’s rooftop garden. The beacon was built with visitors to the garden, looking out over the river Thames, as a reminder of our connections across the world.

Children and their families learned a sailor’s knot to add to the beacon, wove a dreamcatcher based on Anishinaabe culture, and tied plants into the sculpture with macrame, to spill down it like a living green wave. Sculptors young and old thought of a place in the world they’re connected to, and wrote a wish for that place to hang on the sculpture.
